Forest, woodland, rocky sites, near streams, and gullies.
subsp. oxyantha: Kosciuszko National Park and the ACT. Tablelands and ranges between the Kings Highway and the Snowy Mountains Highway.
subsp. ecarinata: Kosciuszko National Park between Wee Jasper and Talbingo Reservoir.
Shrub to 3 m high. Leaves alternating up the stems, 2–7 cm long, 15–40 mm wide, margins entire, upper surface green, pitted, lower surface exposed, pale, hairy. New leaves a distinct coppery red. Flowers with 4 'petals' joined together in pairs, 'petals' scarlet to crimson on the outside, rusty hairy, inner surface pink, bearded. Gynoecium 18–25 mm long; style hairy with minute hairs or warty on the top 3–10 mm. Flowers clustered. Flowers chiefly August–December.
In the absence of specific information, seeds of all species of Grevillea have been keyed as having one wing.
subsp. ecarinata: The free curved back lobes of the 'petals' with no keel or a weak keel along the midline; lower surface of the leaves with straight appressed hairs. Leaves oval.
subsp. oxyantha: The free curved back lobes of the 'petals' with an obvious keel along the midline; lower surface of the leaves hairy to somewhat hairy, with short curled to wavy hairs. Leaves oval to broadly oval or sometimes almost round.
