Perennial herb to 1.3 m high. Basal leaves 5–8; 25–100 cm long, 2–12 mm wide, flat. Flowers blackish, 11–16 mm long, with 6 'petals' in 2 whorls. Flowers in 3–5 dense, widely divergent clusters of several to many flowers.
