Grassy areas, disturbed sites, fence lines, and roadsides. Widespread.
Introduced annual or biennial herb to 1 m tall. Stems hairy or bristly. Leaves basal and alternating up the stems, to 35 cm long, hairy or bristly, margins lobed and/or toothed. Upper leaves becoming smaller and entire up the stems. Flowers with 4 petals each 6-9 mm long, yellow, often with purple veins, in clusters. Flowers Sep.–Jan. Flattened seed cases with a swollen beak usually containing a single seed.
