Cultivated plant, rarely naturalised. Mostly Sydney area, Blue Mountains, and north. Occasionally elsewhere.
Introduced deciduous shrub to 3 m high. Hairless. Leaves opposite each other, 7.5–19 cm long, 40–130 mm wide, margins toothed. Male and female flowers on the same plant. Flowers with 5 petals, falling when the flowers open, and 4-5 sepals initially 0.5–1 mm long. Male flowers white, blue, purple or pink, the sepals united at the base, enlarging to 10-30 mm long. Bisexual flowers inconspicuous. Flowers in dense clusters. Flowers spring–autumn.
