Dry forest, woodland, grassy areas, disturbed sites, and near streams. Widespread.
Introduced annual herb to 0.60 m tall. Stems hairless. Leaves forming a rosette at the base of the plant, 2-20 cm long, 5-30 mm wide, hairless or sparsely hairy or bristly, toothed to dissected, or with wavy margins, margins sometimes with a few hairs, tips blunt. Occasionally leaves alternating up the stems, similar, smaller than the basal leaves, becoming smaller in size upwards. Flower heads yellow, with many 'petals' each 2-5 mm long. Flower heads behind the 'petals' 4–16 mm in diameter, broad cylindrical. Flower heads single or in open clusters of a few flowers. Flowers most of the year.
