Notes

Woody climber with stems twining into and often on top of the canopy. Fruit fleshy. Young stems hairy or bristly, becoming hairless. Leaves alternating up the stems, mostly 8–20 cm long, 80-200 mm wide, almost round to almost kidney-shaped, upper surface green and hairless, lower surface ashy-grey and often hairy with fine hairs, usually cordate at the base, rarely slightly peltate with the leaf stalk inserted 1-3 mm from the edge of the leaf. Male and female flowers on different plants. Flowers greenish white, inconspicuous, male flowers with 6 'petals', female flowers with 0 petals. Male flower clusters 2–9 cm long, female flower clusters 2-4 cm long. Fruit red to bluish black or blue purple, at first with a waxy bloom, almost round, 8–10 mm long. Flowering: mainly summer.
