Forest, woodland, heath, rocky sites, and along streams. Coast, ranges, and eastern edge of the tablelands. Occasionally ACT, the mountains to the west, and Kosciuszko National Park.
Shrub to about 2 m high. Branches often angular, hairless or slightly hairy. Leaves opposite each other, 2–5.5 cm long, 2–14 mm wide, tips pointed; margins flat or curved down, upper surface hairless to bristly, lower surface rough. Male and female flowers on different plants or flowers sometimes appearing bisexual. Flowers sweetly scented, white, 2–3 mm long, tubular, the tube 1.5–2.5 mm long, longer than the 5 lobes. Inflorescence typically more than 20 mm long, usually more than 3-flowered. Flowers rarely single. Flowering: spring.
