Dry forest. Coast, ranges, and tablelands.
Sparsely tufted perennial herb, often with only 2–4 leaves. Leaves basal, cylindrical or flattened cylindrical, usually about 25–35 mm long (rarely less), usually 1–2 mm in diameter, tips pointed. Margins of the basal leaf sheaths scarcely lacerated, reddish or purplish. Male and female flowers on different plants. Flowers with 6 yellow 'petals'. Male flowers globular, about 2 mm long; outer 'petals' broad-elliptic to more or less circular, shorter and more membranous than the thick inner 'petals'. Female flowers more tubular, about 3 mm long. Male inflorescence a third to half or rarely a quarter or nearly as long as the leaves, unbranched or occasionally few-branched; axis of the inflorescence below the flowers approximately as long as the inflorescence. Flowers separate, well spaced. Female inflorescence similar but shorter, rarely branched. Bracts below the individual flower clusters 1-2 mm long.
