Grass like perennial herb to 0.8 m tall. Leaves with 2 sharp teeth at the tip. Leaves basal, 10-80 cm long, 1.3-3 mm wide, flat, glaucous, hairless, red-brown basally; with 2 sharp teeth at the tip. Margins of the basal leaf sheaths lacerated, brown. Male and female flowers on different plants. Flowers white, pink, or mauve, fragrant, with a funnel-shaped tube and 6 'petals'. Male flowers 4–7 mm long, with narrow 'petals', female flowers similar, with broad 'petals'. Male and female inflorescences similar, much-branched, 3–15 cm long. Flower clusters hidden among the leaf bases. Flower clusters hidden among the leaf bases. Flowering: following rain.
