Grass like perennial herb, rhizomes ascending. Flower stem hairy with minute hairs. Leaves basal, 20-60 cm long, usually 1-2 mm wide, flat, with white hairs near the base and along the margins. Margins of the basal leaf sheaths white, readily lacerating into abundant loose silky or woolly, fragments. Male and female flowers on different plants. Fragrant flowers. Flowers white to cream, with 6 'petals' (only 3 obvious), to 7 mm long. Inflorescence spherical or oval, 10-20 mm long. Male inflorescence usually with 1, 2 or 3 segments, female inflorescence usually not segmented, globular. Flowering: chiefly July–Sept.
