Shrub to 0.5 m tall or prostrate. Leaves with sharp tips. Stems cylindrical, hairy. Leaves alternating up the stems or in irregular whorls, 0.8-1.5 cm long, about 1 mm wide, rigid, tips sharp, often curved down, margins rolled down, upper surface smooth or covered with minute warts, lower surface becoming hairless. Flowers 5-7 mm long, pea shaped, with 5 petals, 2 joined together to form the keel, yellow to red, with red to purple or blue markings. Flowers axillary, often single, up the stems. Flowers Spring.
