Perennial herb to 0.6 m high, with perennial underground 'bulbs' and annual stems and leaves. Leaf single, 20–60 cm long, 1–2 mm wide, usually single, narrow-linear, trailing. Flowers pale lilac to pale blue, often spotted with purple, outer 'petals' with a with central orange mark, with 6 'petals' each 13–16 mm long, turned back to spreading. The branches of the style in the centre of the flower look like small petals. Flowers single or in one to several clusters of up to 6 flowers. Flowering: September–November.
