Forest, bushland, woodland, pastures, disturbed sites, gardens, roadsides, and along streams. Mainly coastal north of Shellharbour. Rarely Blue Mountains.
Introduced shrub or tree to 8 m high. Fruit fleshy. Bark rough, longitudinally furrowed. Young branches hairy with minute hairs, becoming hairless. Leaves with a citrus or spicy odour when rubbed, alternating up the stems, compound, 6-20 cm long, with 3–10 leaflets each 1.5–9 cm long, 5–60 mm wide, upper surface glossy, lower surface dull and paler, margins entire to obscurely scalloped, tips pointed. Flowers fragrant, white, with 5 petals each 9–18 mm long, curved backwards. Flowers in clusters of up to 8 flowers. Flowering: irregularly throughout the year. Fruit bright orange red when ripe, shiny, oval to oval, 9-11 mm long.
