Aquatic, in lakes and slow-flowing watercourses. Widespread but not common.

Notes

Perennial herb, rooting mainly at the base. Stems to 2 m long, mostly 1.5–2 mm in diameter, rooting mainly at the base. Leaves in whorls of 4-5. Submerged leaves mostly 1.2-2.5 cm long, with 10–18 narrow segments like the teeth of a comb, dark green. Emergent leaves green to purplish, glaucous in saline situations, mostly 0.4-0.8 cm long, 3–4 mm wide, margins entire or with a few short teeth towards the tips. Male and female flowers on the same stem. Male flowers with 4 hooded petals, green to purple, 3–3.5 mm long. Female flowers with 0 sepals, 0 petals, stigmas dark red. Flowers single at the base of whorled leaves.

Definite identification of species of Myriophyllum often requires microscopic examination of the seed cases, beyond the scope of this key.
