In mud and pools of water to about 1 m deep. Widespread, mostly in the Sydney area.
Perennial or annual herb to 1 m high. Long floating stolons usually absent. There may be stolons a few cm long on stranded plants. Leaves floating when in water, basal and alternating up the stems, 1-6 cm long, round or very broadly oval, upper surface glossy green or sometimes mottled with maroon, lower surface dotted and pale cream to deep purple, base deeply cordate, margins entire or shallowly scalloped. Flowers with 5-6 yellow petals joined together at the base, scarcely fringed on the margins. Petals 5–15 mm long. Flowers floating when in water, in loose clusters of 2-6 flowers or more. Flowers sometimes appearing single. Flowering: spring–autumn.
