Plants of South Eastern New South Wales
Oenothera indecora subsp. bonariensis
None
Onagraceae
Disturbed areas and stream banks. Coastal north of Bermagui. ACT. Occasionally elsewhere.
Introduced annual herb to about 0.6 m tall. Stems few- to many-branched, with dense short simple and glandular hairs. Leaves in a basal rosette, often absent in older plants, and alternating up the stems. Basal leaves 5–7 cm long, 5–13 mm wide. Stem leaves 1.5–5 cm long, 3–10 mm wide, stalkless or more or less stalkless, margins irregularly toothed and wavy. Flowers yellow, becoming reddish with age, with 4 petals, each 6–10 mm long. Flowers single at the bases of the leaves or apparently at the tops of the stems.
Hybridizes with Oenothera stricta subsp. stricta. Hybrids, which are similar in general appearance to Oenothera indecora subsp. bonariensis, are mostly readily identified by the presence of a basal rosette of long narrow leaves, similar to that of Oenothera stricta subsp. stricta.
