Perennial herb to 1.3 m high, stolons to 2 m long. Leaves basal and alternating up the stems, 3–12 cm long, more or less round, margins entire or occasionally scalloped-toothed, bases usually deeply cordate, surfaces glossy-green above, paler or purplish beneath. Leaves of stranded plants erect, less different on either surface and less deeply cordate. Flowers yellow, 19–43 mm in diameter, with 4–6 petals joined at the base.
