Variety of habitats. Widespread.
Perennial herb to 0.3 m tall or creeping, but not rooting at the nodes. Stems almost hairless to densely hairy. Hairs on the stems point upwards (needs a hand lens or a macro app on your phone/tablet to see). Stout taproot. Leaves alternating up the stems, each with three 2-lobed leaflets 0.2-1.5 cm long, 2-15 mm wide, sparsely to densely hairy, margins sometimes hairy, the lobe tips rounded, 2–12 mm apart. Stipules usually inconspicuous. Flowers with 5 yellow petals each 6-12 mm long, in clusters of 1-6 flowers. Flowers throughout the year. Seed cases 8–30 mm long, 1.5–2.5 mm in diameter, cylindrical, usually densely hairy with hairs pointing down (needs a hand lens or a macro app on your phone/tablet to see).
