Weed of lawns, pastures, and disturbed sites. Widespread.
Introduced prostrate perennial herb with a woody taproot. Stems rough to hairy with fine hairs, often knotted and rather woody, to 27 cm long . Leaves opposite each other, 0.3–0.85 cm long, 1–2.5 mm wide, hairy, tips pointed and with a mucro or awn. Stipules conspicuous, at least about half the length of the leaf, membranous silvery, with a long drawn out point. Flowers 1.5–1.75 mm long, with minute petals or 0 petals. 5 hooded sepals 1–2 mm long. Flowers in profuse clusters. Flowers mainly Aug.–Mar.
