Introduced tree or shrub to 15 m high. Fruit fleshy. Young growth covered with appressed, whitish hairs. Leaves alternating up the stems, 10–30 cm long, 40–100 mm wide, leathery, upper surface dark green, hairless or with sparse hairs, lower surface glaucous and sparsely hairy, secondary veins prominent. Flowers yellowish green, 6–7 mm long, with 6 'petals' about 4-6 mm long. Flowers in many-flowered clusters. Fruit yellow-green to dark green, purple, or black, pear-shaped or round, mostly 8–15 cm long, sometimes fruit 5–7 cm long at the end of the season or on some naturalized plants.
