Perennial herb to about 1 m high or sprawling, rhizomatous. Stems sparsely to densely covered with coarse appressed hairs. Leaves alternating along the stems, 6–15 cm long, 5–23 mm wide, sparsely to densely covered in coarse hairs, stipular sheath (ocrea) hairy, with fringing hairs 4–10 mm long. Flowers with 4-5 white to pale pink 'petals', each 2.2–4 mm long, free from each other from half to two-thirds their length. Spikes cylindrical, dense to rather loose, 2–8 cm long, 4–10 mm in diameter.
