Dry forest, woodland, and heath. Widespread.

Notes

Shrub to 1.2 m high, often multistemmed, more or less hairy or rough. Leaves alternating up the stems, 0.2–1.2 cm long, 1-7 mm wide, tips blunt, rough to hairy along the margins and veins, rarely hairless, midrib prominent on the lower surface, tips mucronate, squared off or notched, margins more or less flat, or curved or rolled down. Male and female flowers on the same plant or on different plants. Flowers green to yellow, cream, or white, usually with 6 'petals' each 1–3.5 mm long. Male flowers 2 or 3 together, female flowers single, occasionally paired. Flowering: all year. Seed case hairy, 2.4-4.2 mm in diameter.
