Shrub to 0.6 m high, rhizomatous, hairless, with distinctly reddish stems and branches. Leaves alternating up the stems, mostly 0.1–0.2 cm long, 6–10 mm wide, tips blunt to pointed or mucronate. Male and female flowers usually on the same plant. Flowers with 6 'petals' each about 1.5 mm long. Male flowers in 2-3 flowered clusters, female flowers usually single. Seed case pale yellow-orange, 3.5–4 mm in diameter.
