Forest, often on stony sites. Coast and ranges. Uncommon.
Shrub to 3 m tall or more or less prostrate. Stems hairy. Leaves with spiny tips. Spiny stipules 5–7 mm long. Leaves opposite each other or sometimes alternating up the stems, 1-2.5 cm long, 3-9 mm wide, upper surface reticulate and shining, lower surface hairy with minute hairs to hairless. Standard petal 5-9 mm long. Flowers pea shaped, with 5 petals, 2 joined together to form the keel, yellow to orange, often with red markings. Flowers single or in few-flowered clusters. Flowers Spring to Summer.
