Forest. Mainly coast, ranges, and the eastern tablelands. Occasionally elsewhere.
Shrub to 3 m tall. Stems hairy to hairless. Spiny stipules 1–3 mm long. Leaves lobed, with a sharp point at the tips of each lobe. Leaves opposite or almost opposite each other, 2-10 cm long, 10-30 mm wide, upper surface reticulate and shining. Flowers 8-10 mm long. pea shaped, with 5 petals, 2 joined together to form the keel, yellow to orange-yellow, often with red markings. Flowers in few- to many-flowered clusters. Flowers Spring to Summer.
