Forest, woodland, heath, grassy areas, and rocky sites. Widespread.
Shrub or perennial herb to 0.40 m high, sometimes rhizomatous. Stems cylindrical, more or less hairy. Leaves opposite each other, 0.4–3 cm long, 2–13 mm wide, bristly, or hairy to hairless, tips pointed, margins curved down. Flowers reddish, 2–3 mm long, tubular, with 5 lobes. Flowers usually 2–6 together in simple heads surrounded by a calyx-like cup. Flower heads in wheel-like clusters. Flowering: August–December. Empty cups are often reddish, and persist on the plant for some time after the seeds fall.
