Garden escape. Widespread but not common.
Introduced deciduous shrub or tree to 10 m high, often suckering from the roots. Fruit fleshy, edible. Young plants sometimes spiny. Young twigs usually hairy with short hairs, dull. Leaves alternating up the stems, 4–10 cm long, 15–50 mm wide, tips pointed, margins scalloped or toothed, surfaces hairless or hairy above, hairy below. Flowers white, with 5 petals. Flowers single or in clusters of 2–3 on short side branches, appearing with or before the leaves. Fruit purple, red, yellow or green, round to oval, 1–3.5 cm diameter, hairless, with a waxy bloom. Flowers Sep.–Nov.
