Wet to dry forest, woodland, and heath, often in damp sites. Kosciuszko National Park, the mountains to the north, and ACT. Western Slopes and tablelands south of the Hume Highway and north and west of the ACT. Uncommon elsewhere.
Shrub to 3 m tall, rarely prostrate. Stems sparsely to moderately hairy, the hairs sometimes rusty. Leaves with sharp tips, alternating up the stems, 0.4-3 cm long, 0.5-3.5 mm wide, often concave in cross section, bases often cordate, tips with a stiff bristle or tapered to a slender, sharp point, margins curved upwards to flat or curved down, lower surface darker than upper surface. Flowers 7-13 mm long, pea shaped, with 5 petals, 2 joined together to form the keel, standard petal yellow to orange with red striations, wings yellow to orange, keel yellow with a red tips to completely red. Bracteoles linear, inserted at the base of the calyx tube. Flowers in 1- to few-flowered leafy clusters. Flowers Spring to Summer. Pods sparsely hairy, smooth.
