Introduced deciduous tree or shrub to about 5 m high. Fruit fleshy, edible. Leaves opposite each other or in clusters, 2–7 cm long, 8–20 mm wide, tips blunt to pointed. Leaves turning yellow in autumn before falling. Flowers orange-red, with 5-7 petals each 20–25 mm long, crimped on the margins. Flowers single or in few flowered clusters. Fruit brownish yellow flushed with red, spherical, about 7 cm diameter. Seeds numerous, each surrounded by a juicy translucent pulp.
