Where found

Woodland, grassy areas, roadsides, waste spaces, and wetlands. Widespread.

Notes

Introduced perennial herb, arising annually from a swollen round underground stem (corm). Flower stalks 2–5, 0.03–0.12 m long, hairless. Leaves basal, 8–65 cm long, 0.5–3 mm wide, dumbell- to cross-shaped in cross section, grooved, tough, fibrous, surfaces shiny, hairless, margins entire, tips pointed. Flowers tubular, the tube 2–4 mm long, yellow or orange, with 6 lobes, each 10–20 mm long, pale to bright pink or rosy purple, rarely white, with a yellow centre; the outer 'petals' dark-striped or greenish outside. Flowers single. Flowering: August–November.
