Shrub or tree to 6 m tall, often suckering from the roots. Fruit fleshy. Bark rough, slightly furrowed. Stems angular, striate, hairless. Leaves opposite each other, 3-9 cm long, 3-15 mm wide, hairless, both surfaces about the same colour, margins flat, tips pointed, often with a curved point when young. Flowers white to pale yellow or green with red to orange centres, with 4 'petals', each 1–2 mm long, in many-flowered branched clusters. Fruit red, rarely yellow, 15–25 mm long, edible.
