Annual herb to 1.5 m high. Stems hairless or sparsely hairy. Leaves alternating up the stems, 3-15 cm long, 10–60 mm wide, deeply dissected with 4–6 segments per side, margins toothed to more or less entire, and rolled down, surfaces sparsely hairy or becoming hairless, or the lower surface sparsely bristly, bases with well-developed auricles. Flower heads 5-7 mm long, cylindrical, with 0 petals, surrounded by 8–13 appressed green bracts. Florets 15–25, scarcely longer than the flower head. Flower heads in many-flowered clusters. Flowering: most of the year.
