Forest, woodland, rocky areas, near swamps and rivers, and other moist sites. Widespread.
Annual or perennial herb to 1.5 m high. Stems hairless or sparsely rough hairy near the base. Leaves alternating up the stems, 5-18 cm long, 4–50 mm wide, hairless or nearly so, margins usually with 3–8 triangular lobes per side, irregularly dissected, toothed, or entire, bases with small to moderate auricles on the leaves above the mid-stem. Flower heads cylindrical, 4.5-6.5 mm long, with 0 petals, surrounded by 7–11 appressed green bracts. Florets 8–25, about 2mm longer than the flower head. Flower heads often in 50-200 flowered clusters. Flowering: mainly summer–autumn.
A feature of this species is the precociously developed leafy growth at the bases of the leaves.
