Forest usually at altitudes over 800 m. Mainly ACT, the mountains to the west, Kosciuszko National Park, near Burrinjuck Reservoir, and the western edge of the ranges east and south of Cooma. Occasionally farther north.
Annual or perennial herb to 1.5 m high. Stems moderately bristly, or nearly hairless throughout. Leaves alternating up the stems. Leaves in the middle third of the stem 6-12 cm long, about 10-45 mm wide, lobed to dissected, surfaces hairy with coarse hairs, occasionally becoming hairless; lower surface sometimes with a cobwebby overlay, mid-stem leaves narrowing gradually at the base; upper leaves usually auriculate. Uppermost leaves narrower, widest at the base. Flower heads cylindrical, 5-7 mm long, with 0 petals, surrounded by 7–13 appressed green bracts. Florets 12-20. Flower heads in about 50–100 flowered clusters. Flowering: summer–autumn.
