Forest, woodland, shrubland, grassland, and herbfields, at higher altitudes. Kosciuszko National Park and the mountains towards Albury. ACT. Tablelands and the western edge of the ranges east and south of the ACT.
Perennial herb to 1 m high, stoloniferous. Stems hairy to nearly hairless. Leaves alternating up the stems, often purplish on the underside, midstem leaves 4–12 cm long, 8–25 mm wide, both surfaces more or less rough and cobwebby, lower surface often purplish, margins toothed, or lobed with 2–4 lobes per side, or rarely more or less entire, bases without auricles or the uppermost leaves sometimes with small auricles at the base. Upper leaves narrower. Flower heads cylindrical, 5–7.5 mm long, with 0 petals, surrounded by 11-14 appressed green bracts. Florets 25–40, slightly longer than the flower head. Flower heads in clusters of about 10-200. Flowering: summer-autumn.
