Dry forest and woodland. Mainly Kosciuszko National Park. Sometimes tablelands south from the Kings Highway.
Perennial herb to 0.6 m high. Stems hairless or sparsely hairy. Leaves alternating up the stems, margins entire or with scattered teeth, lower surface purple, both surfaces rough with minute projections. Leaves in the middle third of the stem 4–10 cm long, to 15 mm wide. Upper leaves very narrow, sometimes auriculate, sparsely coarse-hairy or hairless. Flower heads 5–7 mm long, narrowly cylindrical, with 12–25 florets, 0 petals, surrounded by 7-13 appressed bracts. Flower heads in 20–60 flowered clusters. Flowers spring –summer.
