Rainforest and moist gullies. Coast and ranges north from Kangaroo Valley.
Tree to 30 m high, crooked, often with young shoots near the base of the trunk. Arils on the seeds fleshy. Tree bases often flanged, larger trees buttressed. Bark scaly or with shallow fissures. Young stems hairy, becoming hairless. Leaves alternating up the stems, sometimes almost opposite each other, 7–30 cm long, 30–100 mm wide, bases more or less cordate, margins toothed, both surfaces hairless, domatia absent. New foliage often reddish. Flowers white or cream to greenish, with 4 or 5 petals each about 15-20 mm long. Flowers single or in few- to many-flowered clusters. Flowering: spring to summer. Seeds covered by a fleshy scarlet aril.
