Where found

Dry forestwoodland, and grassy areas. Widespread.

Notes

Perennial herb to 0.1 m high. Flower stalks robust, about 0.5-1 mm in diameter. Plants hairless or with very fine hairs. Leaves basal, 2–10 cm long, 5–17 mm wide, tips blunt, surfaces hairless with fringed basal margins, or very sparsely hairy with fine hairs, margins with 12–30 teeth or scallops. Flower heads green, often tinged purple to mauve or magenta, 3–7 mm in diameter, hemispherical. 'Petals' pinkish, minute. Flower heads single. Flowering: spring–summer. Bracts appressed to the flower heads erect at the seeding stage.
