Introduced perennial herb to 2 m high, with creeping rhizomes. Stem hairy with short hairs, or rough, sometimes almost hairless near the base. Leaves basal and alternating up the stems, basal leaves often withered at flowering. Stem leaves 2–17 cm long, 4–25 mm wide, tips gradually tapering to a point, margins entire to toothed, upper surface densely rough, lower surface more or less hairy or rough. Flower heads 5–6 mm in diameter with 5–17 yellow 'petals', each 1–2 mm long, and yellow centres with 2-9 florets. Flower heads below the ‘petals’ 5-6 mm in diameter. Flower heads in many-flowered branched clusters 5–25 cm long, usually with 100 to more than 1000 flower heads. Flowers autumn.
