Forest, woodland, and heath, often in swampy places. Coast and ranges. Occasional elsewhere.
Shrub to about 1 m tall. Stems cylindrical, faintly ribbed, hairless. More or less leafless, sometimes with a few narrow clustered or scattered leaves to about 0.8 cm long. Flowers 4-6 mm long, pea shaped, with 5 petals, 2 joined together to form the keel, yellow, sometimes with red markings, in long clusters of 2-3 flowers grouped together. Calyx and the bracteoles below the calyx with dark dots on a green background. Flowers Spring to Summer.
