Dry forest, woodland, heath, and rocky outcrops. Widespread.
Tufted perennial herb, shrub-like in later seasons, usually to about 1.5 m high. Leaves in two opposite rows, alternating up the stems and opposite each other, 5–20 cm long, 4–15 mm wide, often bluish, bases sheathing the stem. Flowers deep blue to white, occasionally pink, with 6 'petals' 8–16 mm long. Very short yellow fuzzy hairs on the stamen filaments. Flowers on nodding stalks, in open clusters. Flowering: winter-spring.
