Shrubby perennial herb to 1 m tall, hairless. Leaves fleshy, fruit slightly fleshy. leaves alternating up the stems, mostly 0.7-5 cm long, 1–3.5 mm wide, flattened cylindrical to triangular or flat in cross section, tips pointed or blunt. Flowers tiny (less than 3 mm in diameter), bisexual or sometimes unisexual, with 5 'petals' joined at the base, in axillary clusters. Fruit reddish brown, to 2 mm in diameter. Flowers and fruits most of the year.
