Forest and along streams. Coast and ranges north of Milton, occasionally farther south.
Shrub or tree to 25 m tall. Fruit fleshy. Larger trees with short buttresses. Bark flaky, more or less scaly. Young stems 4-winged or 4-angled, hairless, the wings joining above each node to produce a small pocket or hump. Leaves aromatic when rubbed, opposite each other, 2.5-10 cm long, 10-32 mm wide, tips pointed, surfaces hairless and glossy, lower surface paler; lateral veins generally visible; oil glands scattered, often faint. Flowers white, with 4 petals, each 3.5-6 mm long. Stamens 15-20 mm long. Hypanthium about 2-6.5 mm wide. Flowers often in 3-7 flowered clusters. Fruit pink to red, oval, 15-25 mm long.
