Shrub or perennial herb to about 1 m tall or sprawling. Fleshy stems, flowers, and the bracts around the flowers. Seed cases fleshy, spongy, or papery with a pithy interior. Stems dull or glaucous. Leafless. Flowers bisexual, or some plants with only female flowers. Flowers tiny (less than 3 mm in diameter), with 2 lobes, forming spikes to 5 cm long.
