Damp places in forest, woodland, heath, and grassland; swamps and drainage ditches. Widespread.
Perennial herb to 0.5 m high, stoloniferous. Insect traps on the stems. Stems thin and wiry. Leaves in a basal rosette and arising from the stolons, 0.3–14 cm long, 2-5 mm wide. Flowers violet or purple, to mauve, blue, or pink, 12–22 mm long, 12-20 mm in diameter, 2-lipped, the upper lip small, sometimes notched, the lower lip fan-shaped, usually with 2 or 3 conspicuous yellow to white central ridges flanked by less-conspicuous violet or purple ridges. Flowers in clusters of 1–9, or opening one after the other, usually in pairs or whorls of 3-4. Flowering: most of the year.
Only conspicuous when in flower.
