Forest, woodland, and grassland, often in moist or swampy sites. Widespread, but few coastal records.
Perennial herb usually to 0.25 m high, with slender rhizomes to 60 cm long. Flowering stems with fine but rigid hairs to about 0.5 mm long, mostly limited to longitudinal bands, sometimes hairless. Leaves opposite each other, mostly 1–3 cm long, 1.5–9 mm wide, tips with fine drawn out points, margins entire or with 1–4 pairs of teeth, bases tapering rather abruptly. Leaf stalks 1-2 mm long. Flowers pale lilac or blue with darker veins, 5–8 mm long, 8-14 mm in diameter, with a short tube and 4 spreading lobes. Stamens 2. Flowers in clusters of mostly 1–6 flowers. Flowering: spring–summer. Seed cases sometimes broader than long.
Family was Scrophulariaceae.
