Disturbed sites and rocky sites. Widespread but sporadic.
Shrub or perennial herb to more than 0.40 m high. Stems hairy to sparsely hairy, the hairs sharply bent or twisted near their bases. Leaves alternating up the stems, 1–5 cm long, about 0.5 mm wide, thread-like to cylindrical, channelled above, surfaces with scattered simple hairs or hairless, tips pointed. Flower heads more or less cylindrical, 4–8 mm long, with 15-20 purple or mauve or pink 'petals' each 1–2 mm long. Flower heads single at the tops of the stems. Flowering: spring.

Definite identification of most species of Vittadinia depends on microscopic examination of the seeds.
