Perennial herb to 0.6 m high, rhizomatous. Stems hairless or hairy with short hairs near the base. Leaves opposite each other near the base, alternating up the stems higher up, usually leafless in the upper half. Leaves 0.5–5 cm long, 1–3.5 mm wide, margins thickened, usually with a few hardened teeth. Flowers blue, sometimes yellowish outside, tubular, the tube 3–6 mm long, with 5 lobes each 7–16 mm long. Stigma with 3 lobes. Flowers single or 2–3 per stem. Flowers Oct.–Dec.
