Where found

Woodland, grassy areas, roadsides, and other open disturbed sites. Widespread. Occasional on the coast and ranges.

Notes

Perennial herb to 0.8 m tall with a thickened taproot. Stems hairless to sparsely hairy. Leaves opposite each other near the base, usually alternating up the stems higher up, 0.3-7 cm long, 1-4 mm wide. Lower leaves linear. Leaves hairless, or sometimes the lower leaves sparsely hairy, margins flat, and entire or with small hardened teeth, tips pointed. Flowers blue, sometimes pink or white inside, often opaque white to yellowish brown outside, bell-shaped, with 5 (sometimes 6) lobes, each 6-14 mm long. Free lobes of the flower 2-3 times as long as the tube. Stigma with 3 lobes. Flowers in clusters. Seed cases at least 3 times as long as broad. Flowers all year.
