Damp or swampy areas, often in heath. Coast, ranges, and Southern Highlands, north from Ulladulla and south of Eden. Rarely elsewhere.
Perennial herb. Flower stalks to 1 m long, flattened cylindrical to cylindrical. Leaves clustered at the base of the plant, 15–60 cm long, 0.5–1 mm in diameter, flattened cylindrical, sheathing base 5–11 cm long, red to reddish tawny brown or black, often shiny. Flowers yellow, with 3 petals each 5–9 mm long. Flower buds contained within a tight oval brownish head 6–13 mm long, 6–10 mm in diameter. Flowers opening one at a time from within the flower cluster, rarely 2 flowers open at the same time. Flowering: late spring to summer.
